Daily Guide
Note that this is a guide to in-class activities and a place to get in-class handouts. Reading and Response homework is located on another page on this website. The only homework listed here would be something in addition to the already scheduled reading homework--and this would be a rare occurrence.
Day 22 10/24 (A) 10/25 (B)
- Journal: What do you know already about Greek mythology (from school, books, movies/shows, art)? What questions do you have about Greek mythology and/or what are you curious about when it comes to Greek mythology?
- Discussed Group assignment (PDF of instructions). If you were absent today, you'll need to come talk to me to find out what group you're in and what subject you are assigned. This information will not be posted online.

- Journal: Reflect on your previous experiences with making presentations in school (especially recently): What have you done particularly well in these presentations? What have you struggled with in these presentations? What could you do during or in preparation for this upcoming presentation to avoid these struggles? What do you need to do to make sure you do your best on this presentation? What was the goal you made after your presentation in geography? How could you work on that a bit in this presentation?

- Journal: The prompt is in the presentation slides for today. Some of it might require some in-person explanation. Come talk to Noyce if the prompt doesn't make sense after going over the slides.

Day 25 11/2 (A) 11/3 (B)
- Journal: Take notes on the presentations.
- Group Presentations given in class. If you missed class, it is your responsibility to get the information about the presentations you missed. If you have an excused absence, it is also your responsibility to come and talk to Ms. Noyce so we can figure out how you can earn credit for the missed presentation. If you have an unexcused absence, you will not be allowed to make up the presentation and will receive a zero.

- Journal: What is your definition of a hero? What skills, qualities, or accomplishments does heroism require? Who are some of your heroes who fit your requirements? Would the heroes from your assigned myth have fit with your definition of a hero? Explain.

- Journal: Write a summary of the main events from your first two nights of reading in The Odyssey (that should cover books 1, 2, 5, and most of 6). Present these events in the order they appeared in the book and try to work in all the names of the central characters correctly.

- Journal: Write a story that contains at least one simile. Bonus challenge: make it a Homeric/epic simile. For information about Homeric similes, review today's presentation slides.

- Journal: After Scylla eats six of Odysseus' men, he states, "This was the most sickening sight that I saw throughout my voyage" (Homer 131). Odysseus has seen and had lots of horrific moments during his journey. Why do you think this moment is the one that gets to Odysseus the most? Support your claim with details from the text.

- Journal: Which parts of The Odyssey fit in best with the nine Hero's Journey steps we learned about in class? Explain your reasoning for each.
- Handed out lots of important documents (Socratic Seminar Prep Sheet) (Odyssey Essay Test Prompts) (Odyssey Unit Test Study Guide). If you were absent, you need to either print these off or come and get a copy of each in class ASAP.

- Turned in English Notebooks for Days 22-32 log/journal check.
- The Odyssey Unit Test. If you have an excused absence, you must contact Noyce ASAP so that we can make an appointment for you to complete the test.
- The rest of class was yours to complete Square Notes and work on Socratic Seminar Prep Sheet. Both are due by the start of next class. See the previous class's handouts for these materials if you've misplaced them.
Day 35 12/5 (A) 12/6 (B)
- Socratic Seminar. Prep Sheet and Square notes were due at the start of class.

Remember that once the day of the essay hits (that's next class), you can no longer receive even late credit for Square Notes.
Day 36 12/7 (A) 12/8 (B)
- The Odyssey Essay Draft Day. You had the whole class to turn the plan from your Square Notes into your Essay.
Day 37 12/11 (A) 12/12 (B)
- The Odyssey Checklist and Edits (PDF of checklist). Spent the whole class making changes to essay drafts based on the checklist and teacher feedback.

- The Odyssey Essay Final Draft. You had the whole class to complete edits to your essay. If you need more time beyond what was given in class, it is your job to tell me about this BEFORE you leave class today so that we can make an appointment for you to come and finish the essay.
Day 39 12/15 (A Day only. B Day, you'll have this lesson on Jan 2nd when we return from winter break)
- Journal: Write a reflection on a connection you made between something from our science fiction discussion today and one of the statements about science fiction from the exit ticket sheet (PDF of exit ticket)
